Treatments
General Practitioner Specializing in:

My specialty is in treating OCD and anxiety with or without a trauma history. OCD requires a specific treatment approach that is separate from traditional talk therapy. Although that can be helpful, treatment and recovery lie in understanding how OCD operates and learning skills as well as adopting new perspectives that transform rigid thinking to a more flexible and accepting way of being. I use an eclectic style to help my clients including Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy and Exposure and Response Prevention. This includes emotional regulation, learning to think and act rationally, practicing acceptance, understanding triggers and getting “clean” from the addiction to certainty by giving up compulsions and rumination gradually, in baby steps.

Anxiety and panic disorders come from the brain’s overactive fear response. An anxious brain is scanning the environment for danger and looking for ways to protect you. This works out well until this mechanism is sent into overdrive through a combination, very likely, of environmental and genetic factors. I use a similar style in treating OCD, inviting new more flexible perspective, challenging fears to build confidence, and practicing acceptance which comes with time and practice. Living a life free of panic and anxiety is liberating and peaceful, this can be achieved with the right guidance, effort and tools. Overcoming anxiety is about becoming braver and building confidence, not by avoiding fears or uncomfortable feelings. Great things are accomplished by taking tiny steps in the direction of wellness.

While this is currently not recognized as a formal diagnosis it is a useful term to describe those of us who have been through ongoing traumatic events throughout our lives and have unprocessed grief to deal with. Signs and symptoms include numbness, dissociation, codependent behaviors, exaggerated fear response, anxiety, depression, and more. I believe the key to healing lies in grieving what was lost which can be a difficult process. This evokes feelings of guilt, responsibility, deep sadness and anger, all feelings that are complicated and many of us don’t yet have the skills or feel confident we can deal with. I use the inner adult and inner child to help clients understand the parts of themselves that are hurt and the part that can help heal. Treatment with me is about learning to move through that grief one day at a time. In doing so you will develop confidence, skills, and will have a renewed and healthier sense of self and a deeper connection with others.

I enjoy working with this population and have a special connection with adolescent youth struggling with many issues. I understand this critical time period and the confusion of trying to find an identity. My goal is to create a meaningful relationship and gently guide youths as they find their passions and strengths. I help adolescents overcome fear, learn to manage big emotions, and adopt new perspectives that encourage self forgiveness.

I can help with making big decisons, my philosophy is helping clients learn to put themselves first. Making big decisions is made more difficult when a person routinely punishes themselves or spends time regretting their choices, wishing they could take it back. Every choice is a learning experience of which we can come to accept by identifying our beliefs about ourselves. Learning to adapt to life’s changes with flexible thinking can help by teaching one to embrace life’s difficulties and miracles.
